What are Parallel Machine Keys??

Parallel machine keys, also called shaft keys, are used in machinery to fasten wheels, pulleys, gears, and other parts to rotating shafts. They are called parallel keys because they are rectangular. The parallel key holds a part to a shaft by locking into a keyway channel on the part and a keyslot on the shaft, so the part and shaft must turn together.
Parallel machine keys are designed to break in the event that a machine jams, preventing the other expensive machine parts from damage. Machine keys are periodically replaced when performing repairs or maintenance. The width, height, and length of a replacement machine key must correspond to the dimenstions of the keyslot and keyway.
Parallel machine keys are made of different metals, usually steel or stainless steel.
